Breugem Horticulture grows loose round tomatoes on 6 hectares of land. We opt for quality, taking our buyers’ demands into account. It is for good reason that our tomato farm enjoys an excellent reputation with clients.
The Formula 1 of tomatoes
Breugem Horticulture grows the MediaX, from seed breeding company Axia. This tomato is a so-called F1 hybrid tomato. The MediaX is characterized by a delicate flavour, excellent quality and high yield. Our tomato is ideally suited for soups and sauces, salads and sandwiches.
Cultivation
Sustainability and quality are a priority at Breugem Horticulture. That is why we grow tomatoes on a rockwool substrate and choose modern, consistent-quality tomato varieties with good flavour. The tomatoes are placed on gutters: all the water is collected and recirculated. In this system we make optimum use of rainwater and well water. This way we can ensure delivery of a healthy, safe and reliable product throughout the harvest period – from March to October!

Natural predators
Our cultivation strategies are ‘organic whenever possible’. This means that we only use chemical pesticides if there is no alternative. That is why we spend a lot of time examining our crops for potential diseases and pests. We also aim to work as hygienically as possible.
This way we prevent many problems. If a disease or pest should occur, we use natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and predatory mites. Only if this is of no effect do we use chemicals. We are reluctant to use those: chemicals are expensive and harm our natural enemies. Hence: organic whenever possible.
Energy and CO2
Tomato cultivation cannot be done without the use of energy. Breugem Horticulture uses as few fossil fuels as possible. In recent years most heat has come from a geothermical heat source (the oldest geothermical heat source in the Netherlands in fact!). Together with two other growers Breugem Horticulture is unified in a so-called energy cluster.
For better growth, CO2 is essential. It can be produced for instance in the own cogeneration unit. But Breugem Horticulture mainly uses CO2 from the Rotterdam port. This is more sustainable.




Big data and 3D
Tomato cultivation has evolved tremendously over the past few decades. This also shows at Breugem Horticulture. 3D-cameras, for instance, check if the harvested tomatoes meet quality requirements. Big data and algorithms support the set-up of crop yield forecasts and work schedules. This new technology ensures an even more efficient production process and even higher quality at Breugem Horticulture.
Continuous development
Breugem Horticulture is constantly searching for tomato varieties that match consumer demands even closer. Focus in this is on taste, shelf life and resistance to plant diseases and pests. Of course, we also pay attention to work efficiency and efficient use of water and energy. Last but not least ,we research new tomato varieties in order to offer the widest possible range.
